We measure success by throughput while bleeding empathy.

This is the central paradox of our current technological moment. We crave liberation from administrative toil, yet every time we delegate a decision to an autonomous agent, we erode our own agency. We become deskilled. When an entire department relies on an AI agent to draft strategies, write code, and manage budgets, the humans in that room slowly forget how to struggle with ambiguity. We are left performing digital archaeology on our own creations, digging through petabytes of log files to figure out why our electronic servants decided to shut the doors.

We are building a world governed by black boxes, and we are teaching ourselves to trust them simply because the alternatives are slower.

The solution cannot be to retreat into the past. We cannot uninvent these capabilities, nor should we want to. The problems we face—climate modeling, drug discovery, complex resource allocation—are too vast for unassisted human minds. We need these tools.

Instead, the challenge is structural and philosophical. We must redefine what it means to be in the loop. Oversight cannot mean rubber-stamping a machine's output after the fact. It must mean retaining the absolute right to veto, to pause, and to demand an explanation in plain, human terms.
