It lets us ignore the deforestation higher up the slopes, the vibration of heavy trucks shaking fractured shale, and the sheer hubris of thinking we can anchor ourselves to the roof of the world without paying rent to the elements.

The rescue workers dig through the slurry with their bare hands when the mechanical excavators run out of fuel or space. They find helmets. They find ledgers. They find the ordinary debris of human striving: a cracked mug, a family photograph wrapped in plastic, a pair of boots left by a door that no longer exists.

The mountain is quiet again now. The mud has settled into a hard, gray crust that looks like old concrete, sealing the ruins beneath it like a fossil in amber.
